How to Calculate the Number of Luminaires ?
The lumen method provides a practical way to estimate the number of light fixtures required for a room. The calculation considers the amount of light needed, how much light each luminaire produces, and how effectively the room uses that light.
First, calculate the room area:
Room Area = Length × Width
Then estimate the total lumen requirement:
Required Lumens = Area × Target Illuminance × Safety Factor ÷ Utilization Factor
Finally, calculate the number of luminaires:
Number of Luminaires = Required Lumens ÷ Lumens per Luminaire
Round the final result up to the next whole number, since you cannot install a fraction of a fixture.
For example, a 5 m × 5 m room has an area of 25 m². If the target illuminance is 400 lux, the basic light requirement before applying utilization and safety factors is:
25 × 400 = 10,000 lumens
The calculator then adjusts this requirement using the estimated utilization factor and selected safety factor before determining the number of luminaires.

The utilization factor in this calculator is estimated from the room index and the reflectance of the ceiling, walls, and floor. Room index depends on room dimensions and the mounting height above the working plane.
The room index is calculated as:
Room Index = (Length × Width) ÷ [Mounting Height × (Length + Width)]
The mounting height is the difference between ceiling height and working surface height.
For example, a desk or workbench may have a working surface around 0.8 m above the floor. Changing this value changes the mounting height and can affect the estimated utilization factor.
Because actual light distribution depends on luminaire photometry, beam angle, fixture position, room geometry, surface finishes, and other conditions, the result should be treated as an estimate rather than a substitute for a professional lighting design.

Suppose you are planning lighting for a room measuring 5 m × 5 m.
- Room length: 5 m
- Room width: 5 m
- Ceiling height: 3 m
- Working surface: 0.8 m
- Target illuminance: 400 lux
- Luminaire output: 1,500 lumens
- Safety factor: 1.4
The room area is:
5 × 5 = 25 m²
The basic illuminance requirement is:
25 × 400 = 10,000 lumens
The calculator then considers the room index, ceiling reflectance, wall reflectance, floor reflectance, and safety factor to estimate the total lumen requirement. It divides that requirement by 1,500 lumens per fixture and rounds the result up to determine the recommended number of luminaires.
This is why two rooms with the same floor area can require different numbers of fixtures. Ceiling height, surface colors, working-plane height, and fixture output can all affect the calculation.
